A Versatile Specimen

Almost exclusive to North America, flounder is one of the most versatile forms of seafood you can consume. The texture varies greatly, and it can be cooked in a variety of ways; which one is best depends upon personal taste. Fired, baked, or raw, there’s no shortage of ways in which you can consume the delicious specimen.

The Healthy Attributes of Flounder

Unlike salmon, flounder isn’t as nutritionally dense, and this can be explained due to the consistency of the fish itself. Flounder is more than three-quarters water, so the high concentrations that are found in other various forms of seafood aren’t present. That said, an eight-ounce serving of flounder still contains thirty grams of protein and has high concentrations of selenium, vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus.

The Benefits of Flounder in Your Diet

The advantages of consuming flounder are many and are certainly not limited to the vitamins and minerals that are present in the fish itself. Like many other specimens of seafood, flounder has been linked to several health benefits that are necessary for the quality of life. The AHA (American Heart Association) recommends that adults intake two to three servings of fish a week for the promotion of a healthy heart. This is because fish are low in saturated fats but contain fatty acids known as Omega-3s that help lower bad cholesterol and reduce inflammation.

The benefits don’t come close to stopping there. Did you ever wonder why fish is sometimes referred to as “brain food”? That’s because it is! Flounder, and fish in general, have been linked to alleviating symptoms related to depression and can help lower the risk of dementia.

Throw some flounder on the grill and enjoy! You’re doing your body and brain a big favor!
